Oral Surgery Q & A

Why would a tooth extraction be necessary?

Most dental problems, including tooth decay and gum disease, respond well to conservative measures of care. However, if an infection or injury threatens your ability to chew, speak, or bite, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Tooth extraction may sound intimidating, but thanks to modern treatment techniques and advances in anesthesia, there’s nothing to worry about. Extractions are one of the most common types of oral surgery. During this type of procedure, your dentist removes one or more teeth to address decay, trauma, or overcrowding.

If your affected tooth is above the gum line, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider might recommend a traditional extraction. If you have an impacted tooth, or a tooth that can’t break through your gum line, you may benefit from a surgical extraction.

What should I expect from a tooth extraction procedure?

There are two types of tooth extractions: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. Simple extractions are reserved for teeth that can be seen above the gumline. In a simple extraction, the tooth is loosened with a small tool called an elevator, then taken out with dental forceps.

A surgical extraction is a bit more complicated as the tooth may be broken off close to the gum line or have not yet erupted through the gum line, which is typical with wisdom teeth. In these cases, your dentist makes a small incision in your gums to remove the tooth. The tooth may need to be cut into pieces to be extracted, and it may also be necessary to remove some of the bone around the tooth.

In both a simple extraction and surgical extraction, your dentist at Emery & Scuro, DMD, PC, gives you a local anesthetic, so you won't feel any pain or discomfort during your procedure.

Am I a good candidate for oral surgery?

If you think you might benefit from oral surgery, make an appointment with the caring team at Emery & Scuro DMD, PC. During your initial consultation, your provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your medical history, and asks about your symptoms. They also order X-rays to get a closer look at your jawbones and tooth roots.

Whenever possible, the team uses conservative, noninvasive measures of care. However, if you have a serious injury or problem that requires surgical intervention, they can develop a custom treatment plan that aligns with your needs.
