Implant-Based Dentures Q & A

What are implant-based dentures?

Implant-based dentures are a type of false teeth that attach to a series of small metal posts. The team at Emery & Scuro DMD, PC, places these posts into small incisions in your gum line during surgery.

Following surgery, you return home and allow your mouth to heal. As your mouth heals, your bone grows around each implant, fusing it in place to your jaw.

Implant-based dentures snap into place. This allows you to bite, chew, and speak confidently, without having to worry about the slipping or sliding associated with traditional artificial teeth.

Am I a good candidate for implant-based dentures?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for implant-based dentures, the team at Emery & Scuro DMD, PC conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks you about your treatment goals. They also take a series of oral X-rays to view your jawbone volume and look for signs of infection.

If you have gum disease or don’t have enough jawbone to support your implants, the team may recommend laser gum surgery or a bone graft before moving forward with treatment.

During your initial consultation, make sure to let the team know if you have a chronic health condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. Although these conditions won’t disqualify you from getting implant-based dentures, they may increase your risk of complications.

What is the process for getting implant-based dentures?

Getting implant-based dentures takes a series of appointments spaced out over the course of several months. Before implant surgery, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your gums. Once the anesthesia sets in, your provider carefully places a series of two to eight metal posts into small incisions in your gum line.

Following surgery, you return home, and your mouth heals for about six months. Once the implants heal in place, you return to Emery & Scuro DMD, PC. At your second appointment, your provider connects abutment pieces to each implant and takes impressions of your gums. They send your impressions to a lab that manufactures a full arch of artificial teeth.

Once the lab finishes your new set of artificial teeth, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider snaps them in place. You leave the office with a brilliant smile that looks and feels just like your natural teeth.
