Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small posts made of porcelain or titanium that act as replacement tooth roots. During surgery, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider places your implants into small incisions in your gum line. Following this procedure, you return home to heal, and your bone grows around each implant, fusing them to your jaw.

Of all the types of restorative dentistry, dental implants are the sturdiest and most durable. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, allowing you to bite and chew confidently.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Compared to traditional tooth-replacement options like dentures, dental implants present several advantages, including:

  • Improved comfort
  • Easier eating
  • Better oral health
  • Durability
  • Improved speech

Dental implants are also convenient. Because they’re fused to your jaw, you don’t have to worry about using sticky or messy denture adhesives.

Are dental implants the right treatment option for me?

Only a qualified dentist, like those at Emery & Scuro DMD, PC, can determine if dental implants are right for you. However, if you’re missing some or all of your permanent teeth and don’t want to wear dentures, you likely qualify.

Prior to moving forward with treatment, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider conducts an oral exam and takes X-rays to see your jaw bones and to determine if you have gum disease. If there’s no infection present and you have healthy jawbones, your dentist can move forward. If not, you may need to undergo periodontal treatment or a bone grafting procedure.

Does getting dental implants take a long time?

Getting dental implants usually takes approximately 9 months, and a series of appointments spaced several months apart, to obtain the best long-lasting results.

The first step in the process is dental implant surgery. During surgery, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider numbs your gums with an anesthetic. After the anesthesia sets in, your provider places a series of implants –– one for each missing tooth –– into small grooves in your gum line.

Once your mouth heals and your implants fuse to your jaw, you return to Emery & Scuro DMD, PC. At this appointment, your provider takes impressions of your remaining teeth. Then, they send your impressions to a dental laboratory. The laboratory manufactures your crowns, bridge, or implant-supported dentures.

At your final appointment, your Emery & Scuro DMD, PC provider attaches your crowns, dental bridge, or dentures to your implants. The restorations screw or snap into place, ensuring they don’t move around. You leave the office with a new smile that allows you to bite, chew, and speak confidently.
